What I Ate Wednesday – California-Style!

February 8, 2012 By Heather Blackmon

.

Today we’re going to head back to California and take a look at some of the food highlights of my weekend in Sacramento/Sonoma. We tried some fabulous restaurants that I really want to highlight, so expect a follow-up post where I’ll expand a little more on some of these. For today, let’s just enjoy the food porn that is What I Ate Wednesday! And since this blog is already Better With Veggies, you know I love this month’s theme:

What WIAW isn’t about

Comparison – Judgement – Restriction – Guilt

What WIAW is about

Celebrating one of the glorious things we all have in common: We all eat!

WIAW is about food and fun! It’s about making new friends, breaking out of a food rut, inspiring yourself & others, embracing fruit & vegetables, finding new ways to eat your favorite foods, and so much more <3

Celebrate blogging. Celebrate Food. Celebrate Individuality.
[Cause over here, we like to party!]

WIAW Food Collage

1 – Salad of the Season (the girl + the fig, Sonoma) with shaved parsnips, roasted shallots, pickled kumquats, & kumquat vinaigrette

2 – Baha Street Tacos (Sugar Plum Vegan Cafe, Sacramento)  with shredded cabbage, pico de gallo, lime creama, & jalapeno served with spanish rice & black beans

3- Mixed seasonal radishes (the girl + the fig, Sonoma) with olive oil &  grey sea salt

4. FigCello (the girl + the fig, Sonoma) – think of a Lemoncello, but with fig instead of lemon.

5. Kale & Sweet Potato Pizza with Sriracha Aioli (Sugar Plum Vegan Cafe, Sacramento)

6. Dad’s Spaghetti and Quinoa Balls (Dad’s Kitchen, Sacramento)

I loved Sacramento (and already knew I loved Sonoma) and would love to go back. It was fantastic finding so many restaurants that offered excellent plant-based dishes on their menu! Only one of these three restaurants was a vegan restaurant, the other two were far from it and still offered some great choices (like quinoa balls, instead of meatballs at Dad’s Kitchen). I was really impressed with the variety and quality of food, which is what I have seen in every visit to California.

I’ll happily go back to Sacramento anytime! =)

What was the best restaurant find you discovered recently (either in your hometown or travelling)?

What has been your favorite travel location for awesome food? For me, it would be Italy – delicious!

Which is more YOUR thing - camping near an alpine Which is more YOUR thing - camping near an alpine lake or shredding on a local trail? ⬇️

In both cases, we need to protect the land we enjoy on our adventures. And Leave No Trace is one program that helps with that - especially those that have a high rate of degradation through a program called Hot Spots.

I'm excited to be partnering with @leavenotrace and @onxbackcountry to celebrate and preserve all these beautiful outdoor places. And for all of June, $10 of every onX Backcountry membership is being donated towards Leave No Trace’s Hot Spot program. A great way to get access to my favorite backcountry app AND support LNT!

I added a link in my bio if you're interested in learning more, so you can help #ExploreandRestore!

What scares me is probably different than what scares you.

I am admittedly a timid mountain biker - but getting better every day.

I'm afraid to face plant, but still working on crow pose in yoga.

Am I the only one still (basically) living in yoga Am I the only one still (basically) living in yoga clothes?

For at least part of the day, it's just easier to put on yoga pants, sports bra, and a "zoom-appropriate" top. Or a button-up layered over my workout tank. It makes it SO much easier to squeeze in a workout when I have time.

Tell me I'm not the only one who's not going back to work clothes?!

But really, keep your gaze straight ahead to keep your neck safe in bridge (or Setu Bandha Sarvangasana). It's rare that a version of this pose isn't included during cooldown in my classes.

Do you love bridge as much as I do?
