Trains, Skyrail, and Kangaroos in Kuranda

I’m so glad you guys enjoyed Kirk’s Ironman Cairns recap yesterday! Thanks for all the amazing comments and support. Maybe we’ll get him to make a more regular appearance here?

Today we’re moving on to post-Ironman and our trip to the Kuranda Village in the Rainforest! Several people recommended this trip while we were in Cairns, so we booked it for the day after the race. Yes, we have always planned a daytrip the day after an Ironman. We’re crazy like that.

There’s two ways to get to and from the Kuranda village – scenic railway or Skyrail. We decided to do both!

Heading to Kuranda we took the train. It’s a little over an hour one-way and there’s plenty of beautiful scenery along the way.

Kuranda Scenic Train

One we arrived in Kuranda, much of the group went shopping and we went for a hike through the rainforest. I know you’re surprised by our choice of activity, right? 🙂 It was a beautiful forest and a great place for goofy photos!

After our walk, we visited the Kuranda Koala Gardens. It’s a smaller park, but with plenty of Australian animals to photograph. And our first sighting of a Wombat!

Then we got to the best part of the attraction – the kangaroos!! Not only did you get to see them, you could feed them! It was so cool to get to interact with them. These little guys were so cute and no boxing…

I could hang out with these guys for hours, but we did have to head down the mountain eventually for our tour pickup. Luckily we had a fun ride to take us back down – the Skyrail!

The Skyrail takes you back down over the rainforest – a very different view than what you see on the ground. If you look closely in the picture above, you’ll see a white cockatoo flying over the forest!

We had such a good time on this daytrip and loved getting to see a different area of Australia!! Perfect way to spend our last day in Far North Queensland before heading down to New South Wales.
