Happy Memorial Day + Friday Night in the Rain

May 28, 2012 By Heather Blackmon

.

Happy Memorial Day! To any veterans or active service members and military families, I want to take a moment to say THANK YOU!! Your service and sacrifice does not go unnoticed and I am very grateful to you.

I actually hope you are NOT reading this on Monday and you are instead out and enjoying an extra day of rest and fun with your friends & family. But in case you are taking a break from all the sun & fun, I did want to share a quick recap of my Friday evening with Lauraat Just For Giggles! I am getting all the painting in I can handle right now, so that I’ll have plenty of artwork to hang up when we move. 🙂

Today’s painting started with tracing a stencil of the people & umbrella. I keep picking the paintings that have “help” – oops! Anyway, we traced the stencil and then covered the canvas in white paint surrounding the outline.

Next up, we painted in the umbrella and silhouette. The umbrella was actually a lot harder than I expected to get the right shape and texture. I retouched this one a couple of times before we finished for the evening. The silhouette wasn’t too bad, although my girl had some interesting shaped legs for a little while. Thank goodness I had plenty of white paint to fix that one. 🙂

Finally the rain. The rain actually freaked me out – I was sure I would mess everything up! The technique was pretty fun though, once we got started. Black paint in lines (with skipping sections) straight down the page – immediately followed by water from the brush to let the drops literally drip down the canvas. Very cool!

I am pretty happy with the end result – this one will look great on a wall somewhere!

I probably should have headed home after painting, since we caught a very early flight on Saturday morning, but Laura talked me into Sip for wine. She really had to twist my arm, as you might expect. 😉

Sip is a great little wine bar in the same complex as Just For Giggles, so we dropped our paintings off in our cars and walked down. They have an extensive wine list and offer several sizes of wine selections, allowing you to have a “sip” or a bottle of almost any wine on the menu. We stayed far too late, but had a wonderful time chatting and enjoying our wine selections (the specifics are escaping me right now).

I know you’re probably curious to hear about Colorado, but I’m still enjoying my long weekend there, so you’ll have to wait just a little bit longer!! =)

********************

Questions for you:

  • Are you a veteran or active service member?
  • What did you do this weekend?
  • If you had to pick one style of wine to drink for the rest of your life – what would you choose? No fair saying “white” or “red”

In both cases, we need to protect the land we enjoy on our adventures. And Leave No Trace is one program that helps with that - especially those that have a high rate of degradation through a program called Hot Spots.

I'm excited to be partnering with @leavenotrace and @onxbackcountry to celebrate and preserve all these beautiful outdoor places. And for all of June, $10 of every onX Backcountry membership is being donated towards Leave No Trace’s Hot Spot program. A great way to get access to my favorite backcountry app AND support LNT!

I added a link in my bio if you're interested in learning more, so you can help #ExploreandRestore!

What scares me is probably different than what scares you.

I am admittedly a timid mountain biker - but getting better every day.

I'm afraid to face plant, but still working on crow pose in yoga.

Am I the only one still (basically) living in yoga Am I the only one still (basically) living in yoga clothes?

For at least part of the day, it's just easier to put on yoga pants, sports bra, and a "zoom-appropriate" top. Or a button-up layered over my workout tank. It makes it SO much easier to squeeze in a workout when I have time.

Tell me I'm not the only one who's not going back to work clothes?!

But really, keep your gaze straight ahead to keep your neck safe in bridge (or Setu Bandha Sarvangasana). It's rare that a version of this pose isn't included during cooldown in my classes.

Do you love bridge as much as I do?
