Weekend Trail Adventures – Kennesaw Mountain + Tallulah Gorge

June 5, 2012 By Heather Blackmon

.

This weekend I had the opportunity to get out to the trails twice – once for a trail run and once for a hike with awesome friends. Both tons of fun, but both very different.

Saturday Trail Run

Let’s start with Saturday’s trail run. I woke up on Saturday morning completely unmotivated and lounged around in bed for a few hours. I knew I needed to run, but I wasted all the cooler temps putting it off. Instead of skipping, I decided to try out my new Vasque Mindbenders to test out and review. I used the fun of trying out my new shoes to help get my booty out the door (and it worked!).

I love these shoes. They are very light when comparing to my Montrail Trail running shoes, have plenty of room in the toe box, and the soles conform nicely to the rocks and uneven surfaces of the trail. Did I mention I didn’t fall at all – for 10 whole miles?!

At the end of the run, I filmed a super-quick video to say thank you to you!

10 miles was a little harder than I would like, but I’m just happy I got out there and did it!

Sunday Hiking

On Sunday morning, Kirk & I woke up early and drove up to Tallulah in North Georgia to meet up with Lindsay, Laura, and Nancy.

We all arrived with our Fitmixer bottles full of Aminos – great minds think alike! I have been loving the Fitmixer Aminos before/after strength workouts and for activities like hiking.

Laura did a great job explaning why the Fitmixer Aminos are so amazing in this post. I’m not going to try to top that, so head on over and check out her post to learn more about why BCAAs are amazing.

I decided to test out my Vasque Mindbenders on the hike, as well. We spent a good portion of the hike scrambling over rocks, jumping from rock to rock across the water, and just generally trying to stay dry and on our feet. Once again – no falling!

These shoes really conformed  nicely to the rocks both on the trail Saturday and on the rocks Sunday. I am a fan – these are my new favorite trail shoes by far!

I’ll leave you with a quick update on my first day of work. It was a great first day (or half a day, by the time I arrived at the office). I have a new computer, badge, office, and several meetings already on the calendar for the week. I was really impressed at how organized and productive things were already – so far so good!

And with that, it’s time to wrap up this post for the day!

Disclosure: I was provided with a pair of Vasque Mindbenders in exchange for my honest opinions about the product. All opinions are my own.

In both cases, we need to protect the land we enjoy on our adventures. And Leave No Trace is one program that helps with that - especially those that have a high rate of degradation through a program called Hot Spots.

I'm excited to be partnering with @leavenotrace and @onxbackcountry to celebrate and preserve all these beautiful outdoor places. And for all of June, $10 of every onX Backcountry membership is being donated towards Leave No Trace’s Hot Spot program. A great way to get access to my favorite backcountry app AND support LNT!

I added a link in my bio if you're interested in learning more, so you can help #ExploreandRestore!

What scares me is probably different than what scares you.

I am admittedly a timid mountain biker - but getting better every day.

I'm afraid to face plant, but still working on crow pose in yoga.

Am I the only one still (basically) living in yoga Am I the only one still (basically) living in yoga clothes?

For at least part of the day, it's just easier to put on yoga pants, sports bra, and a "zoom-appropriate" top. Or a button-up layered over my workout tank. It makes it SO much easier to squeeze in a workout when I have time.

Tell me I'm not the only one who's not going back to work clothes?!

But really, keep your gaze straight ahead to keep your neck safe in bridge (or Setu Bandha Sarvangasana). It's rare that a version of this pose isn't included during cooldown in my classes.

Do you love bridge as much as I do?
