The Truth About Bulking {Bikini Comp Q+A}

March 31, 2015 By Heather Blackmon

.

It’s the first week of prep for my third bikini competition! After three months of bulking, I am incredibly excited to start cutting calories and start to uncover the muscle that I have (hopefully) built over the past few months.

The Truth About Bulking (Bikini Competition Q&A) // FITaspire.com

To celebrate the start of bikini prep (and because I thought it would be fun), I’m kicking off a new video series to answer your questions. Since I’m just coming off of 3 months of bulking, I thought it made sense to start with Bonnie’s questions about bulking – how it feels psychologically &  if you can gain more than you want. Check out the video for my thoughts on the topic:

Highlights from the video:

  • Bulking is taking in excess calories to give your body the fuel it needs to build muscle. You then work hard (and lift heavy!) in the gym to take advantage of all those calories.
  • Sounds fun, but it was very hard for me to physically eat that much food! Still focused on macros to keep the gain as clean as possible.
  • It was very mentally challenging to watch the scale go up each week and keep eating so much food.
  • I’m at my heaviest weight ever and nothing fits! Hoping that when the excess weight comes off, the muscle gains will be worth it

In both cases, we need to protect the land we enjoy on our adventures. And Leave No Trace is one program that helps with that - especially those that have a high rate of degradation through a program called Hot Spots.

I'm excited to be partnering with @leavenotrace and @onxbackcountry to celebrate and preserve all these beautiful outdoor places. And for all of June, $10 of every onX Backcountry membership is being donated towards Leave No Trace’s Hot Spot program. A great way to get access to my favorite backcountry app AND support LNT!

What scares me is probably different than what scares you.

I am admittedly a timid mountain biker - but getting better every day.

I'm afraid to face plant, but still working on crow pose in yoga.

For at least part of the day, it's just easier to put on yoga pants, sports bra, and a "zoom-appropriate" top. Or a button-up layered over my workout tank. It makes it SO much easier to squeeze in a workout when I have time.

Tell me I'm not the only one who's not going back to work clothes?!

But really, keep your gaze straight ahead to keep your neck safe in bridge (or Setu Bandha Sarvangasana). It's rare that a version of this pose isn't included during cooldown in my classes.

Do you love bridge as much as I do?
