This Week In Training {Competition Prep #4}

September 3, 2013 By Heather Blackmon

.

I don’t know about you, but Labor Day sure came at a great time for me! I have been go-go-going for weeks and really needed some time to relax. Since half of my weekend always feels like I’m preparing for the next week, an extra day was much appreciated. And it was wonderful!

This Week In Training // #competitionprep

We decided last week that quick trip to the mountains was what we needed, so we booked a condo on the lake in Dillon, Colorado (near Keystone) and spend Saturday through Monday enjoying mountain life. I wanted water (a lake or river), mountain views, a gym nearby, peace & quiet. Kirk found the condo we ended up staying with & it had all of that!

The Workouts

Leading up to the weekend, I started a new group of workouts. As I mentioned last week, they are longer and harder – definitely putting in the work now! As I was entering the new workouts into JEFIT, I was reading some of the plan to Kirk in shock. Like a superset of 60 weighted walking lunges, followed by squats…repeated 5 times. Ouch!

  • Monday – Legs (Hamstring), Chest & Arms + AM/PM Cardio
  • Tuesday – Back, Shoulders + AM/PM Cardio
  • Wednesday – Legs (Quads), Abs + AM/PM Cardio
  • Thursday – Off!
  • Friday – Legs (Hamstring), Chest & Arms + AM/PM Cardio
  • Saturday – Back, Shoulders + AM/PM Cardio
  • Sunday – Legs (Quads), Abs + AM/PM Cardio

My new rotation is 3 days of work with 1 day of rest, then repeat. The strength workouts take about 1 hr 30 minutes (if I move fast!), followed immediately by 30 minutes of cardio. The cardio session is intervals within a heart rate range, with 2 minutes on the low end & 1 minute on the high end. Then I have a second cardio session in the afternoon/evening. Yep, that’s a total of 2 hr & 30 minutes 6 days a week.

For 5 of the 6 days, I’m running for my first cardio and then fitting in my second cardio sometime during the day in the work gym. This weekend, of course, I did both workouts in the gym at the condo – which was awesome!

Competition Prep Workouts while Traveling

I’ve had really good luck with gyms when traveling this year! When I travel for work it really is just luck, but when we travel for fun it’s something we take the time to look for.

You may have noticed from the schedule above that yesterday was a rest day, so I’m starting back up again today! You can always follow my workouts on Instagram throughout the week, since I post after all my workouts to help keep myself accountable & you motivated. 🙂

And now it’s time to announce the winner of the Living Proof Gear giveaway from last week. If you didn’t win, you can head over to the Etsy store and buy one anyway – I really think you’ll love it!

And the winner is….

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Congratulations Amber!! Please email me with your shirt selection, size, address, phone number this week to claim your prize.

In both cases, we need to protect the land we enjoy on our adventures. And Leave No Trace is one program that helps with that - especially those that have a high rate of degradation through a program called Hot Spots.

I'm excited to be partnering with @leavenotrace and @onxbackcountry to celebrate and preserve all these beautiful outdoor places. And for all of June, $10 of every onX Backcountry membership is being donated towards Leave No Trace’s Hot Spot program. A great way to get access to my favorite backcountry app AND support LNT!

I added a link in my bio if you're interested in learning more, so you can help #ExploreandRestore!

What scares me is probably different than what scares you.

I am admittedly a timid mountain biker - but getting better every day.

I'm afraid to face plant, but still working on crow pose in yoga.

For at least part of the day, it's just easier to put on yoga pants, sports bra, and a "zoom-appropriate" top. Or a button-up layered over my workout tank. It makes it SO much easier to squeeze in a workout when I have time.

Tell me I'm not the only one who's not going back to work clothes?!

But really, keep your gaze straight ahead to keep your neck safe in bridge (or Setu Bandha Sarvangasana). It's rare that a version of this pose isn't included during cooldown in my classes.

Do you love bridge as much as I do?
