How would you describe your daily life?
Do you relax around the house, enjoying leisurely lunches with your friends, and cocktails at the club before a quiet dinner at home?
Yea…that only happens in movies as far as I’m concerned.
My days are more often a series of appointments – from workout, to work, to an after-work appointment, and home to sleep. Some weeks you could throw a few airports and a hotel into that story. In general, that’s a lot of rushing from place to place! Does that sound more like your day?
I would bet that you’re also trying to make healthy food choices throughout that busy day. For those of us who don’t love meal prep, finding grab & go healthy snacks can be a life saver!
I recently had the chance to try three of the new Hillshire Snacking boxes, which has been especially helpful in my final few weeks of prep! Why does life get particularly busy just as big events roll around? These snacks are in limited release through the end of September, but we were lucky in Denver to get them early.
The three that I chose? Grilled Chicken Bites with Mango Habanero Dipping Sauce, Genoa Salame with Natural White Cheddar Cheese, & the Genoa Salame with Natural White Cheddar Cheese. I shared my cheese with Kirk, as I’m not eating dairy right now due to my upcoming show.
Why I Like These Snacks
So many travel snacks are high in sugar or high in carbs and low in protein. These stand out because they are fairly balanced – with at least 15 grams of protein in every snack! And they are easy to throw in your lunchbox or purse (with a ice pack, if you’re going to keep them there a while).
It’s also great to find a travel snack that REAL food! It’s not a bar, a bag of nuts, or beef jerkey (all of which I love to grab on the go) – it feels more like a meal.
The chicken bites are just plain fun – they reminded me of chicken nuggets, but much better. And are you shocked to hear that I ate chicken?? The habanero mango sauce isn’t too spicy and does a nice job giving flavor to the chicken (for those of us who aren’t huge fans of chicken, that’s really important!). And they are gluten-free, which is great news if you have a gluten sensitivity or intolerance!
The small plates (salame, cheese, and crackers) reminded me of a travel-sized charcuterie and cheese plate! I made mine into little sandwich stacks as I ate. These were my favorite of the two snack styles – although the chicken bites are a better choice when you need a lower-carb option.
The only negative I could see is the crackers have sea salt, which gives a bit saltier taste than I would have preferred (if I could choose any cracker). But not enough that it would stop me from buying more – I fully intend to restock this weekend!
I’m so happy to see more healthy travel snacks like this on the market, this really makes eating healthy on-the-go much easier!
