3 Things NOT to Do at the Gym

November 7, 2014 By Heather Blackmon

.

We all have them. Those things that others do at the gym that drives you crazy. You take a deep breath, roll your eyes, and try to get on with your workout. But I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in finding these things annoying. So let’s have a little fun today and commiserate together. Then when you catch someone doing one of these things next time, you can actually smile knowing you’re not alone.

3 Things NOT to Do at the Gym // FITaspire.com

1. Hogging the Equipment

You know that guy (or girl) who camps out on the piece of equipment you need? I’m not talking about someone actually using the squat rack for a while, but the one who takes 5+ minute breaks between sets to chat with a friend. And refuses to let you work in. Then when you ask that person if they are done or if you can work in, they insist they only have one more set. Then return to their conversation with the buddy. Ugh.

Don’t be that person. Either let others work in or move quickly!

2. Smelly People

I’m on the treadmill busting out some crazy intervals. Panting and sucking wind, focusing on getting to my next recovery interval. This is usually about the time that someone who hasn’t showered in days OR doused in perfume jumps on the machine next to me. There’s nowhere to go. Now you have to decide if you can breathe through it, switch machines, or call it quits early.

Don’t be that person. If you smell, shower. Yes you’re going to sweat, but you’re not working out alone. And don’t try to cover up the smell in tons of perfume. This is a good rule in most situations.

3. Loud conversation

This is one where I know I’m a bit sensitive, but I don’t want to hear every detail of your life if I don’t know you. You’re at the gym to work, not gossip. At least, you should be. Remember that there are others around you and use your inside voice. If I can hear every word, with my headphones in, and music turned up…you’re probably talking too loud.

Don’t be that person. Be conscious of those around you and keep your conversations between friends.

I hope you take this in the lighthearted way this is intended.Don’t bother getting offended if you’ve made one of these mistakes. Just take my advice and fix it! 🙂

Which is more YOUR thing - camping near an alpine Which is more YOUR thing - camping near an alpine lake or shredding on a local trail? ⬇️

In both cases, we need to protect the land we enjoy on our adventures. And Leave No Trace is one program that helps with that - especially those that have a high rate of degradation through a program called Hot Spots.

I'm excited to be partnering with @leavenotrace and @onxbackcountry to celebrate and preserve all these beautiful outdoor places. And for all of June, $10 of every onX Backcountry membership is being donated towards Leave No Trace’s Hot Spot program. A great way to get access to my favorite backcountry app AND support LNT!

I added a link in my bio if you're interested in learning more, so you can help #ExploreandRestore!

What scares me is probably different than what scares you.

I am admittedly a timid mountain biker - but getting better every day.

I'm afraid to face plant, but still working on crow pose in yoga.

Am I the only one still (basically) living in yoga Am I the only one still (basically) living in yoga clothes?

For at least part of the day, it's just easier to put on yoga pants, sports bra, and a "zoom-appropriate" top. Or a button-up layered over my workout tank. It makes it SO much easier to squeeze in a workout when I have time.

Tell me I'm not the only one who's not going back to work clothes?!

But really, keep your gaze straight ahead to keep your neck safe in bridge (or Setu Bandha Sarvangasana). It's rare that a version of this pose isn't included during cooldown in my classes.

Do you love bridge as much as I do?
